In 2006, on US20 between Corvallis and Newport, the Pioneer Mountain – Eddyville (PME) project broke ground to replace 10.5-miles of narrow, winding, and crash-plagued highway with 5.5-miles of a safer new roadway with wide shoulders, guardrail, and passing lanes. During construction, substantial problems led to delays and major changes to the design and construction contracts. Now, by using some unique design and construction processes, the project has been constructed and the new highway is open.
Steven Schultz has been the ODOT Project Manager on the PME project since 2013 and will give a short history of the project and talk about some of the unique design, construction, and project management techniques that were used to reinvigorate and successfully complete this challenging project.
