Willamalane Park and Recreation District recently opened a new system of hiking and mountain bike trails in the 665 acre Thurston Hills Natural Area. This unique site is home to a variety of habitats including conifer and mixed forest, oak woodland, oak savanna, prairie, cliffs, rocky outcrops, and talus. The habitats are home to a multitude of plant and animal species including nine that are listed as priority species for conservation.
Presenters Kristina Koenig Boe and Fraser MacDonald will discuss how fire exclusion has allowed native and non-native vegetation to encroach into and degrade crucial habitat, and how Willamalane and partners are working to restore the land while reducing potential wildfire fuels.
