This month's topic is Safety Studies: Right Turns and Rumble Strips.
David Hurwitz, associate professor at OSU's School of Civil and Construction Engineering, will share findings from two recent traffic studies conducted to determine how drivers respond to a flashing yellow light used at right turn intersections and the feasibility of sinusoidal rumble strips as an alternative to traditional centerline and shoulder strips.
In the flashing lights study, drivers were tested using a driving simulator to compare their performance using three variables: various turn signal types, length of the rightturn bay, and presence of pedestrians at the intersection. The findings have indications for improving safety at intersections with a high volume of right-turn traffic. Traditional rumble strips work by creating a sound to alert drivers as they cross out of a traffic lane. Unfortunately, many neighborhoods reject these strips as disruptive, creating a need for a less-noisy alternative. Exterior and interior sound levels and interior vibrations generated by two types of rumble strip strikes were compared to baseline and nostrike sound levels for three vehicle types.
RSVPs help the organizers plan for the event. Please reserve your spot!
