Good morning APWA OR members and education event attendees – As you know spring is a very busy time of year for our Chapter. We look forward to gathering together as a group at several events. This year we have been closely monitoring the updates and recommendations related to the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide, and locally in the Pacific Northwest.
Yesterday, Governor Kate Brown issued an order that all gatherings of more than 250 people are banned statewide in Oregon for four weeks to try to stop the spread of COVID-19. She noted that “it’s time for us all to do what we can to slow its spread.”
While the APWA OR events don’t reach the large gathering threshold in the Governor’s ban, the APWA OR Board has made the difficult decision to cancel the Chapter’s spring events, including:
Street Maintenance and Collections System Spring School / ROADeo (March 17-20) at Riverhouse in Bend;
Developing Leader 2020 (March 17-20) at Sunriver;
Spring Conference (April 7-10) in Seaside; and
Preventive Maintenance for Roadway Surfaces (April 21-22) at Eagle Crest.
We are working with Cameo Management Solutions related to the logistics of the event cancellations, and the possibility of rescheduling the events. In particular, we will be looking at our ability to hold the Developing Leader class later this calendar year.
Please know that this was a difficult decision for the Board, as we know that many, many hours have gone into planning for these events. We appreciate the efforts of the event committees, speakers, exhibitors, and everyone else that helps prepare for and put on these events.
The health, safety and well-being of our members, exhibitors, and event staff is of paramount importance. We also know that as a group we are on the front lines in our communities, and we believe it is in everyone’s best interest to cancel the events so that we can continue to serve our communities to the best of our abilities.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, or any of the Chapter Board, with any questions or feedback.
Be safe, and be well –
