Climate change is affecting weather and precipitation patterns here in the Pacific Northwest. From source water protection and management, to riparian restoration, stormwater detention, and regulatory compliance, the way that we manage water is fundamentally shifting. Understanding climate change's projected effects to these systems helps utilities and engineers plan for a more resilient system, equipping them to ensure greater resilience for the remainder of the 21st century. Pioneering work being conducted in our region offers us some ideas as to how to plan for these paradigm shifts, and how to partner together to achieve meaningful results.

Matt Glazewski is a Pacific Northwest expert on global climate change and its impacts to water resources and water utilities. Prior to living in Portland, Matt worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington DC, where he helped author visioning and strategy documents regarding NOAA's role in the changing Arctic region. Matt has previously managed the climate change portfolio at Water Environment Services of Clackamas County, where he helped spearhead a new County Climate Action Plan and raise awareness of climate change impacts in the region. Matt has also served on the planning committee for the Pacific NW Climate Conference in 2019 and again for the 2020 conference. Currently, Matt is the Principal of Tamarack Consulting NW, a firm dedicated to working on climate change mitigation and adaptation projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. Matt also teaches oceanography, meteorology, and a foundational course on global climate change at Portland Community College.

The luncheon is organized by APWA with non-members always welcome. The cost of the buffet lunch is $8.75.
