Veteran’s Scholarship Set For Inaugural Distribution in 2016
The Oregon Chapter of APWA and the Oregon APWA Scholastic Foundation are proud to announce the introduction of the Veterans of the United States Military Commemorative Scholarship.
This annual scholarship will be awarded to a military veteran pursuing a public works career at certain Oregon institutions of higher education and who honorably served in any of the five branches of the United States military including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. The current plan is to rotate the scholarship among various schools from year-to-year to give veterans, from across the state, the opportunity to receive these funds.
Earlier this year, the Chapter’s board approved a $5,250 contribution to this scholarship as seed money and challenged the attendees and exhibitors of the 2015 fall conference to match this amount with the hopes of bringing the scholarship’s fund balance up to $10,500. By doing so, the Scholastic Foundation could issue a $500 scholarship once that funding level was met.
The attendees of the conference far exceeded the goal and the scholarship is now just a few thousand dollars away from reaching the next pinnacle which would be $15,750. This fund balance would allow for a $750 scholarship and if we reached $21,000, we could issue a $1,000 scholarship.
The Chapter Board and the Scholastic Foundation Board would like to encourage all APWA members to help us meet at least the $15,750 goal by contributing to this scholarship. With Veteran’s Day just around the corner (November 11), let’s see if we can attain this new fund balance by the end of business on November 10. As always, APWA and the Oregon APWA Scholastic Foundation are 501(c)(3) organizations and your contribution may be tax deductible. Please consult with tax professional for details regarding your personal situation.
