Veteran’s Scholarship Set For Inaugural Distribution in 2016
The Oregon Chapter of APWA and the Oregon APWA Scholastic Foundation initially introduced the Veterans of the United States Military Commemorative Scholarship in 2016 as noted above.
This annual scholarship will be awarded to a military veteran pursuing a public works career at certain Oregon institutions of higher education who honorably served in any of the five branches of the United States military including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. The Veterans Scholarship is rotated annually among various schools to give veterans from across the state the opportunity to receive these funds.
When first introduced, the Chapter’s board approved a $5,250 contribution to this scholarship as seed money and challenged the attendees and exhibitors of the 2015 fall conference to match this amount with the hopes of bringing the scholarship’s fund balance up to $10,500. By doing so, the Scholastic Foundation could issue a $500 scholarship once that funding level was met.
The attendees of the conference far exceeded the goal. The fund balance continued to grow which allowed for a $750 scholarship and once the balance reached $21,000, the Chapter could then issue a $1,000 scholarship which continues to be the current value of the Veterans Scholarship.
The Chapter Board and the Scholastic Foundation Board would like to encourage all APWA members to continue to help us maintain the $21,000 funding balance by contributing to this scholarship. As always, APWA and the Oregon APWA Scholastic Foundation are 501(c)(3) organizations and your contribution may be tax deductible. Please consult with tax professional for details regarding your personal situation.
